National Carry AcademyDONALD TRUMP’S POSITION ON GUN FREE ZONES
September 12, 2016
Republican Presidential candidate and Real-estate mogul Donald Trump ended one of his campaign rallies by calling for an end to so-called gun-free zones on schools and US military bases.
“I will get rid of gun-free zones on schools — you have to — and on military bases on my first day. It gets signed my first day. You know what a gun-free zone is to a sicko?” Trump asked. “That’s bait.”
Trump’s rally was occurring at the same time as US President Barack Obama’s televised town-hall forum addressing gun violence. Obama has repeatedly called for gun control measures after recent mass shootings and took executive action to expand background checks on gun buyers, among other things.
But Trump argues that more people need to be carrying arms to protect the innocent. Donald Trump has slammed Hillary Clinton, as “heartless” for backing restrictions on gun ownership that he said would leave Americans in high-crime areas unable to protect themselves.
Trump has repeatedly said that gun-free zones are a magnet for mentally ill shooters and that the recent mass shootings in Paris and California could have been prevented if more citizens were armed to protect themselves and others. For months, Trump has specifically called for the elimination of gun-free zones at military installments, and now his call is to do the same at schools.
In July, 2015 at a military installation in Chattanooga, Tennessee, a gunman, identified as Muhammad Youssef Abdulazeez, killed four marines in attacks on a military recruitment center and a Navy and marines reserve center. Additionally a marine recruiter and a police officer were injured in the violence before the gunman died after a shootout with police.
In 2015 alone, three mass shooting incidents occurred on school campuses. The massacre at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Oregon in October resulted in 10 people dead and 9 injured. Seven people were injured in May at a mass shooting at Southwestern Classical Academy in Flint, Michigan. Two student were killed and another two injured, when a 14 –year-old student opened fire in the cafeteria of Madison High School in Middletown, Ohio.
Trump is quick to point out that he is not advocating guns in classrooms. But he does believe that trained teachers should be able to have guns in classrooms as concealed carriers.
Trump has stated publicly that “Crooked Hillary Clinton is the most anti-gun, anti-Second Amendment candidate ever to run for office,”
The NRA has officially endorsed Donald Trump as it’s presidential nominee. In his speech to the NRA convention, Wayne LaPierre stated “Mrs. Clinton has said that the Supreme Court got it wrong on the Second Amendment. So the choice for gun owners in this election is clear. And that choice is Donald Trump.”
