National Carry AcademyTHE MOST IDEAL GUNS FOR WOMEN
September 1, 2016
Why is it that when a woman talks about getting a handgun, people always try to steer them toward a small handgun. Maybe the movie are responsible for that as almost every western shows a female saloon girl pulling a derringer out of her garter or a female spy pulling a tiny revolver out of her purse. The truth is, women don’t want a miniature gun. What women are looking for in a gun is:
- A gun that is easy to shoot. Some gun require quite a bit of effort to pull the trigger or rack the slide. A gun won’t do much good if you can’t pull the trigger or get the round in the chamber to be fired.
- A gun that fits comfortably in a woman’s hand. Women typically have smaller hands than men, so the gun must fit comfortably in the hands of a woman. Your hand should comfortably wrap the entirety of the grip, giving you a strong handle on it. The meat or pad of your finger should lie solidly and comfortably on the trigger.
- A gun that does not have a heavy recoil. Large, powerful firearms can be difficult for even physically strong people to handle due to the blowback from being fired. Generally, the larger the caliber of the gun, the heavier the recoil and power.
- A gun that will stop an assailant. You need to be able to trust your handgun to work reliably. You also need that gun to be powerful enough to stop an attacker dead in his tracks. Women carry a gun to defend themselves and their loved ones. So you need to be confident that your gun will work when you need it to and work well. While lots of people have been killed with .22s over the years, the record shows that the .22 caliber is generally poor at stopping the attacker.
Most experts would agree that a revolver or a semi automatic pistol are the two best choices for women.
Revolvers are simple to operate, highly accurate and extremely reliable. They hold only 5 or 6 rounds, end to by bulky and heavy, have a hard trigger pull and typically greater recoil.
A semi-automatic pistol have an easier trigger pull, are easy to reload, can hold more rounds of ammunition and are slimmer and lighter weight. They are generally more expensive, are more likely to misfire and take more hand strength to chamber the first round.
- The Ruger LCR .38 SPL is a revolver that is 6.5 inches long and weighs 9.6 ounces. It holds 5 rounds and has a full metal frame and a hard plastic grip. The smaller size makes it easy to conceal and it has a very manageable recoil due to its all metal frame. It’s a revolver so it is simple to operate and accurate.
- The Springfield XDS 9mm is a semi automatic striker fired pistol that is 6.3 inches long and weighs 21.5 ounces. It holds 8 rounds and comes with a fiber optic front sight to help with aim and accuracy and has a nice smooth trigger pull. Racking the slide can be a little more difficult than some other semi-automatics but, for the price, this is a great little gun.
- 3. The Glock 19 is a 9mm pistol that is one of the most popular self-defense handguns for women. It is 7.4 inches long and weighs 30 ounces. It comes with a modular grip system so you can customize the grip to fit the size of your hand. With its dual recoil spring system, the amount of recoil you feel when shooting is reduced. It is small enough to carry concealed but large enough to shoot well.
- The Sig Sauer P238 is just 5.5 inches long and weighs 15.2 ounces. It can hold 7 rounds, has an easy slide, light trigger pull and its full metal frame helps suppress some of the recoil. It can easily fit in the palm of a women’s hand and is small enough for concealed carry. Don’t let the size fool you though; this is one powerful little gun.
- Smith & Wesson M & P Shield 9mm is a great semi-automatic pistol that is 6 inches long and weighs 19 ounces. It is easy to hold due to the synthetic grip, has a manageable reduced recoil and has a laser sight fixed to the front of the trigger guard. The sight helps with aim and accuracy, which is what you need in a self-defense. It is small enough for concealed carry and has enough stopping power to get the job done. It’s an excellent balance between power and recoil.
Every woman is different and what is comfortable for one is not necessarily so for another. Before you buy a gun, you need to try out several types, sizes, and calibers of guns to see how they feel and how they shoot. Once you find your gun, go find a class that will train you to be a confident shooter.
