That Handgun Might Soon Cost $100 More

Over the past few months, we have seen a few metropolitan entities pass laws that charge an additional tax on all firearms and ammunition sold under their jurisdiction. Seattle and Los Angeles are the two most recent examples.

We have talked about how that is not only going to hurt law abiding citizens by charging them extra money to exercise their constitutional rights, but it is going to hurt local business owners while doing absolutely nothing to reduce violent crime in their cities.

Well the first iteration of a national bill has been introduced by democratic New York congresswoman Nydia Velazquez. The Bill, masquerading under the title “Reducing Gun Violence in our Neighborhoods Act,” aims to enact a $100 tax on every firearm sold and purchased legally. Her co-sponsor, US Rep Hakeem Jeffries, is adding additional stipulations regarding stolen or lost firearms that if not reported within 48 hours the owner would face a $10,000 fine.

Velazquez is quoted stating:

Gun violence is a plague on our city that shatters lives and tears families apart… This bill will take meaningful steps to address the issue, reducing the flow of guns on the street, empowering law enforcement to better track missing weapons, while investing in community anti-violence programs.

While the congresswoman fails to mention HOW these new regulations will actually reduce crime that is statistically committed by firearms obtained illegally, it does raise the “warm and fuzzy” feeling among those who don’t own firearms.

While this bill has a snowball’s chance in hell of passing, it further proves that the continual assaults against law abiding citizens, while seen primarily on the local level, is gaining traction at the federal level day after day.
