Mixed Signals from Washington DC on Armed Citizens
Over the past sixteen months, the NRA and active gun owners in the Washington DC area have been fighting an uphill battle against the government pertaining to their Second Amendment rights.
During this time period, we have seen Washington DC establish carry permit regulations while noticing that the process to obtain a permit is next to impossible in the Federally controlled district.
This past weekend, DC Police Chief Cathy Lamier, who has been quoted in the past telling citizens to run and hide as opposed to intervening to stop a lethal situation, has suddenly turned to recommending that if citizens can intervene in a lethal situation that they should.
She goes on to say in a 60 minutes interview:
“That’s kind of counter-intuitive to what cops always tell people, right? We always tell people, ‘Don’t…don’t take action. Call 911. Don’t intervene in the robbery’… We have never told people, ‘Take action.’ It a different…scenario.”
For decades handguns were outlawed in Washington DC until the supreme court overturned the ruling in 2008. Since then, the city leaders have enacted restrictive and limiting regulations that are still being challenged by law abiding citizens and gun owners in the nation’s capital.
DC’s last true test with an active shooter was in 2013 when a contractor shot twelve coworkers at the Washington Navy Yard. After action reports from this situation revealed that police radio channels were overloaded, civilian police officers were not familiar with the military complex, and emergency calls were routed to multiple different 911 call centers.
The gunman was on a free rampage until Police shot him. What could have happened if some of the workers and employees on site had been armed with their personal defensive handguns?
