Mike Rowe is best known as the longtime host of Discovery Channel’s Dirty Jobs and CNN’s Somebody’s Gotta Do It. He is a champion of blue collar jobs and bringing back American Manufacturing. Congress asked him to testify before two committees on jobs and the economy.
He is also a gun owner and supporter of the 2nd amendment right to bear arms. He has been openly critical on his Facebook page of the White House’s call for stricter gun control laws and the need to expand background checks on citizens that wish to purchase a gun.
In 2015, the New York Times ran an article on the “Modern Man”. After a fan sent the article to Mike Rowe, he responded by altering the 27 statements about being a Man’s Man as a humorous reply. One of his replies became a “meme” that the NRA has used as a poster. It reads ”A Man’s Man owns at least one firearm. He knows how to use it, clean it, and store it properly. He understands its importance, and sees it for what it is – a tool that can protect him and his family.”
As I got to thinking about it, his statement pretty much summed up everything we need to know about Gun Safety.
For most people, the primary purpose of owning a firearm is personal and/or home defense. Having the firearm locked in a safe, and unloaded isn’t practical when an intruder is coming through your door. The firearm needs to be accessible to you and in a practical location. Carrying your firearm on your body is the best option.
Storage of the firearm when you are not up and about or if you are unwilling to carry the firearm on your body at home, creates a unique and complicated set of issues.
Where do you keep you firearm that is secret but secure?
What if you have children in the house?
The most important rule in a house with children is that all firearms should be stored unloaded and locked up and the ammunition be locked in a separate location. Make sure your children or the children of guests don’t have access to the keys or the lock combinations.
Teach your children what a gun is, what it can do, and that they should never touch it without your permission.
