How Not to be a Responsibly Armed Citizen
About a week ago we received details about a gun shot in a Kansas movie theater. Fortunately, no one else was injured, but as details emerge about the situation it has become clear, the man who had the firearm was far from responsibly carrying his weapon.
Cody Deneault (our Irresponsible Gun Owner of the Week) was carrying his defensive carry weapon that day in a dark movie theater. After an investigation and interviews, it turns out that the shot was actually a negligent discharge that resulted in damage to his leg. Fortunately, the bullet did not hit anyone else.
His response was almost as plain as “oops.” Cody stated that “I just had an accident. Accidents happen to everybody, even professionals.” While that statement is certainly true, there is a difference between negligence and mistakes.
Cody goes on to say that “I think I either bumped the trigger or pushed it the wrong way or something and it went off.” Low and behold the reason that this was able to happen was that he was simply pocket carrying the firearm without a holster or any protection over the trigger well.
Importance of Safety
All responsible gun owners know that safety is the most important topic. Whenever you are handling a firearm, whether purchasing, handling, carrying, transporting, or shooting, practicing gun safety is the most paramount activity.
Specifically while carrying, the most important safety point to focus on is ensuring that your firearm is secured and that the trigger is protected to prevent negligent discharges. Keep in mind, whether or not it is an accident, the person handling the firearm is responsible for all bullets that are discharged.
If this man would have accidentally shot the person in front of him, he would be in jail. If he would have killed someone, he would be in jail for life.
“Accidents happen” is perfectly fine to say if your child spills their drink, or if you bump into someone on the subway, but that statement will never fly for a gun owner who discharges a bullet.
Cody, if you are reading this it is nothing personal, but I would mandate that you receive further training and employ the proper equipment before you ever carry a firearm again.
Please remember that when you are carrying a firearm, you are also representing the entire population of responsible, law abiding gun owners. The media already does a good job of painting gun owners in a negative light, we do not need incidences like this to be happening, but most importantly we are happy to see that no one was injured.
