There are some fathers out there who may be thinking right now “what concealed carry handgun would be appropriate for my daughter in college”. It is important to note that when choosing a handgun for your daughter, there are different factors that should be considered including the living conditions, her roommates, her lifestyle and the laws of your state and her school.

Purchasing A Handgun For Your Daughter

If your daughter is below 21 years of age, she will not be able to purchase a gun by herself. She must be in either junior or senior year before she can walk into a gun shop and choose her handgun.

If you are planning to be the one to buy the handgun for your daughter, I tell you you’ll have a hard time filling out the ATF Form 4473, particularly on Question 11a.

11.a. “Are you the actual transferee/buyer of the firearm(s) listed on this form?

Warning:  You are not the actual buyer if you are acquiring the firearm(s) on behalf of another person.  If you are not the actual buyer, the dealer cannot transfer the firearm(s) to you.“

So, as we can see here it is difficult to purchase a handgun on behalf of another person, particularly your daughter who is under 21. And if you are planning to purchase the gun and privately transfer it to your daughter, maybe you would like to check the laws of your state about this first.

If there are no specific laws that say private transferring of the firearm is illegal, then you can do it.

So now, if you are asking what best concealed carry handgun is appropriate for your daughter, it would be the one that she is comfortable with.

Before she can have her own firearm, she must first attend a training course like everybody else should. As mentioned earlier in the post, please check out your state laws about training. You can find that info HERE. And if shes already got the skills to carry responsibly, take her to a shooting range where you can rent pistols and revolvers. That’s when she can pick the best handgun she is comfortable using. This may cost you almost half the price of the handgun, but it is better to spend that amount of money now than just randomly choose what handgun is best and risk the safety of your daughter.

Here are some of the recommendations for your daughter.

  • Let her try different calibers including .32, .380 Auto, 9mm, .357 and .40 S&W and different ammunition. If she can try all of them, she’ll identify the best one that works for her.
  • Learn the policies of her university regarding carrying of firearms and discuss it with her.
  • Assist her when applying for a concealed carry permit. She may feel intimidated especially it’s her first time. And because there are lots of paperwork to do, you should be there to guide her throughout the whole process.
