Your pleasure knows no bounds when you lay your hands on your favorite rifle for the first time. It might be just another adventure sport for you or you might need it for self-defense or even for trying your arms at a shooting range to mock over your competitors. The feeling is just immense. The adrenaline in you soars to a new height right from the time you buy this prized possession to the time you wanna try out your range of shots from this mean machine. Well, it is pretty human to be lusted to try your hands on it as soon as you buy it. But wait and it is truly well worth the wait because it’s a weapon after all and you need to be thorough with its working before you fire the first shot. After all you are dealing with a weapon which if not used properly can be hazardous. Here we chart out a handy checklist to ensure that your rifle does what it is meant to rather than go bizarre.
Browse through the Owner Manual: This is indeed the first and foremost step when you buy your piece of machinery. Most people ward it off in excitement of laying their hands on their weapon and thinking that it might be a boring piece to refer to. But mind you me, given the way the technicalities change in this fast paced world one should take the effort to read the manual well. Many a nuance mentioned therein will save you a lot of herculean effort later on. Also as the old adage goes, God is in the details so might as well read it.
A Rifle is as incomplete as its accessories set: Make a conscious effort to see if all the accessories provided with your rifle are in place. Many a time there could be a mis-match and the manufacturer might place a wrong accessory to go with your rifle. This happens rarely but it makes sense to do a proper check. It could also be a case where one of things has been missed by chance. So do a random check.
Clear the Rifle: Before you have the feel of your weapon in your hands it makes sense to clear this piece of weaponry. Point the muzzle towards a safe direction while you check to see if the bolt is open, the chamber is clear and the magazine is empty. The muzzle should be pointed in a safe direction until you have done a thorough check.
Lubricate the Rifle: Make sure to lubricate your rifle wherever required. A Rifle smoothened well by lubrication will fire shots with an incessant amount of ease. Many times your rifle might carry manufacturing residue in the form of metal shavings which might act as an obstruction while you operate your rifle. Used Rifles are often times prone to powder residue which clogs the machinery. A proper lubrication will do a world of good to your Rifle.
Test the trigger: An important step in your checklist drill is to test the trigger. Make sure you try clicking it while your rifle is empty. Bolt up the rifle, engage the safety and apply pressure to the trigger. If the sear releases and you hear an audible sound otherwise referred to as a click and that would enable the firing pin to move forward. If this occurs then you should contact your dealer for further action. If on the other hand the safety does hold then you can feel at home and safe with your piece of weapon. Last thing is to check the weight of the trigger, this simply means that when you pull the trigger does it happen smoothly or there is a coarse transaction. A slight lubrication will help to pull the trigger with an innate amount of ease.
Check for the right Ammunition: Many a rifles have the capability to fire more than one kinds of ammunition. It is more the case with the modern day weapons where the piece of machinery is re-engineered to handle more than one kind of ammunition. Double check this to ensure that you know what works best with your Rifle and get to the shooting range with the best lot.
With a new Rifle you are equipped with a weapon of self-defense and with this handy checklist you are all set to fire your shots with a discerning amount of ease and efficacy. The winner is always the one who is confident about his weaponry and understands it well and then shoots it with alacrity.
