If you move from one state to another, what do you do about your concealed carry permit? If you think you’ll just use your existing permit until it expires and then apply for anew one in the state you move to—Think again.
The laws vary by state, but as a general rule, you’re required to have the domestic license if you’re a resident. Non-residents can certainly have a license from another state, but residents have to have resident licenses.
A resident concealed carry permit is only good so long as that person is a resident of that state. When somebody moves to a different state and establishes residency, that permit isn’t good anymore. Essentially, as soon as you apply for your driver’s license in your new state, your concealed carry permit is null and void.
Each state has its own unique way of processing applications and may have different requirements than your former residence. You may have to wait days or months to satisfy residency requirements. Don’t rush out there and get a driver’s license that doesn’t match the state that issued your carry permit. Instead, check out alternative means of proving your residency, then get your new state carry permit application submitted and get your new permit in hand before you do something that negates the legitimacy of your existing one.
Once you have your CCW permit in hand, you need to apply for a resident concealed carry permit for the state that you are moving to. Find out what the requirements are for your new home state’s residency for a concealed carry permit by contacting your new state’s issuing authority. They’ll either have an FAQ section on their website or you can just call and ask.
One step many concealed carriers forget when they are moving is to be sure to check to see if the states that you will be driving through will reciprocate your concealed carry permit or license. Not every state has the same laws as the state you currently live in and not all will recognize your state’s concealed carry permit or license as also being valid in their own state.
Many states prohibit transportation of a loaded handgun without a valid concealed carry permit. If one or more states does not reciprocate with your license, you’ll need to either plan to stop, unload your gun and store it according to the laws of that state while traveling through, or plan a route around it. Penalties can be stiff for those concealed carriers that are pulled over on the road by police. It is against the law to illegally transport firearms and you can have your gun confiscate, be sentenced to time in jail as well as risk having your concealed carry permit or license rights revoked.
With a little advanced planning, your move should go smoothly will only a small period where you are not covered for concealed carry.
