Many people mistakenly believe they can pick up a gun and carry it around and be ready to shoot it when necessary. Perhaps TV and the movies have given us this idea of the ease of getting and using a firearm. In reality, there is a lot of responsibility that come from being an armed citizen. First, you need a license to carry a firearm and, if you plan to carry all the time, you need a Concealed Carry permit. Second, if you pull your gun you should be prepared to shoot to kill. Third, you are held to a higher standard than a citizen without a weapon so your behavior needs to be beyond reproach at all times when carrying a weapon.
Get trained on how to effectively draw your gun, clear your cover garment and get a good grip on your gun so you can accurately shoot your target.
Before you leave the house with your firearm, you should enroll in a Concealed Carry class to get your permit, learn the rules of engagement and understand the laws and restrictions on carrying concealed. Then you should get some practice training on the basics of defending your life with a firearm. The last thing you want is to be put in a situation where you need to fire your weapon to defend yourself when you have only actually fired it a few times. You need to be sure you know what you are doing before you leave the house carrying concealed.
Get Your Concealed Carry Permit
Just like you need a driver’s license to drive, you need a permit to carry a concealed weapon. Don’t put yourself at risk of being arrested. Do what is necessary to get a legally recognized Concealed Carry permit.
Choose the Right Firearm, Holster and Carry Method
Your Firearm should be correctly sized for you and your body so that you are comfortable carrying it everyday. The same is true for your holster and the method you choose to carry. If it is not comfortable to carry, then it is not right for you and you risk not being able to draw it easily or re-holster properly.
Don’t ignore the basics of personal safety just because you carry a firearm.
Don’t purposefully go into dangerous areas looking for trouble just because you have a concealed firearm. You are not a vigilante or a superhero looking to take down bad guys. You carry a concealed weapon in order to defend yourself and your loved ones.
Keep your weapon concealed.
Guns make most people nervous. In this day of terrorists, criminals and mass shootings, flashing your gun around is more likely to get you killed than to identify you as one of the good guys. Make sure you have a holster and a cover garment that completely conceals your weapon.
Avoid shooting unless it is absolutely necessary.
If you carry and gun and use it, you need to be prepared to accept the legal consequences of being arrested, charged and tried. Law enforcement officials will not automatically assume that you shot in self-defense. Since you are an armed citizen, you have a greater responsibility to monitor your behavior while carrying. Never pull your gun unless you are prepared to shoot to kill and can accept the consequences of that decision.
Make sure you know how to retain control of your gun in a fight.
If you are in a fight, can you keep your assailant from taking your gun away from you? This is where practice and training come into play. In order to maintain control of your gun at all times, no matter what the situation, you need to practice regularly and keep up to date on techniques through training.
When you are not carrying, secure your firearm from children and others with unauthorized access.
Part of the responsibility of owning a firearm is making sure it does not accidentally fall into the hands of someone that could use it to cause harm to themselves or others. Make sure you know how to store your firearm-unloaded in a placed that is locked away from unauthorized users.
Know the Law.
Every state has different laws regarding where you can and can’t carry a gun. it is your responsibility to know the laws of the state you are in. Some states respect the right to carry a concealed weapon and others do not.
Use Common Sense
Carrying a concealed firearm means you carry the poser of life or death. You need to be sure you can act responsibly with that type of power in your hands. Respect Life and respect your weapon.
