National Carry AcademyHow To Handle A Wrong Accusation
August 3, 2016
It is a not-so-lucky day for you, and you are out with your family eating in a restaurant or waiting for the bus or walking around the mall when somebody from your behind shouts, “He’s carrying a gun!”
And of course, one of the first things you will do is to find whoever is shouting. That’s when you will realize that a woman is screaming while pointing at you. She is referring to you! Your gun maybe had accidentally peeked from its holster when you adjusted the collar of your suit, or the woman saw it from your back when you reached out for those keys that fell out from your pocket.
You are now becoming the center of everyone’s attention. Some are getting away from the scene, while some are still trying to understand what is happening. The screaming woman is getting more hysterical and causing panic to other people.
When she shouted “He’s carrying a gun!”, your first move was probably to guard your family and to reach out for your firearm. But since you already know that it is you she is talking about, what would be the action? Her high-pitched scream might now be causing anger to you, as you know this woman doesn’t know that she’s causing chaos that should have not been happening. And voila, you are an instant celebrity!
What To Do
Be calm.
Do not escape from the scene the moment you realize that the woman is pointing to you and your gun. If you run away, it will appear to them that you are guilty of a crime. You would also draw more attention and it would cause more panic from the people around. Have your family with you and remain calm instead.
Do not come near the screaming woman.
This woman is a stranger to you, and you are a stranger to her as well. She doesn’t understand that you have the license to carry a self-defense firearm and she may not even care if you are legally allowed to do so. Do not be carried away with your anger, or you will be the one to lose in this game. Do not get near the woman or try to calm her by explaining everything, because you might look like a threat or a criminal once you do so.
Keep your hands away from your pistol.
You can put your hands up to keep you from holding the gun or put them over your chest. Wait for the authorities to arrive. You may also let your hands dangle on your side so that you can be sure that no one will attempt to grab your pistol from behind.
Wait for the law enforcement.
Because of the woman’s behavior, the mall’s authority or the law enforcement will come to scene. You must not argue with them. Explain the situation to them and answer truthfully when you are interrogated. Remain calm when doing this. Tell them that you have a carry permit and that you are legally allowed to carry a firearm. When you do this, the police officer may ask you to present you carry license and you must comply with it. It is also possible that the mall’s officer may ask you to leave the premises even though you are not the one who caused disturbance in the first place, and you must not argue.
The last thing you would want to happen is that the officer will arrest and handcuff you and forcefully take your pistol away from you. If this happens, remain quiet and calm. Contact your lawyer as soon as possible because this could be grounds for lawsuit.
