National Carry AcademyHow Possible Is It For A Gun To Accidentally Go Off?
July 27, 2016
It is not uncommon to hear about someone claiming that he accidentally shot himself in the thigh or any part of the body. You will sometimes hear from the news that the gun just went off by itself and you’ll think, ‘is this really possible?’ Add to your thinking that guns nowadays and even guns before do not discharge by themselves unless someone pulls the trigger.
But then, to tell you the truth, it is really possible for a gun to go off even if you do not touch its trigger. Jason Hanson from USA Carry proves this to be true. He was teaching about the Defensive Rifle in a Firearms Instructor Bootcamp. Everybody was using AR-15s except for one, who had an AK. After the drills, the one who uses the AK put his safety on, so his finger was not touching the trigger.
Suddenly, there was a gunshot. And since everyone was instructed not to fire their guns, they were all surprised. When Jason approached the AK, he found that the safety was cracked. This may be the cause of the sudden firing of the gun.
Like every gun owner knows, this case is really rare. But because of this event, every gun owner should always strictly adhere to the four rules of firearms safety. This is also the reason why firearms instructors always stress safety in every training course.
Luckily, the man was doing this during training, and not while inside the house, where any of his family member could get hurt. Just think about the danger it can bring to your children if you do not take extra precautions with taking care of your gun.
The use of a bulletproof vest when unloading or loading your firearms at home can also add to you and your family’s safety. So, even though we all know that guns do not fire by themselves, we still have to remind ourselves that some parts of the gun may break and cause the gun to accidentally go off. Whether you are loading or unloading a gun, pay attention and be careful all the time.
