Who doesn’t love a good deal? Craigslist is making headlines again after a recent deal turned deadly earlier this week.
A father and son were all set to meet someone selling a vehicle on craigslist when they got more than just a bargain. On Tuesday night, two men were shot in Urbandale Michigan after what was supposed to be a simple test drive was anything but.
While looking for an address (that turns out doesn’t exist) to check out the vehicle, three men jumped the duo and attempted to rob them. Fortunately the son, who has a permit to carry license in the state of Michigan, was able to draw his defensive carry weapon and shoot two of the criminals.
While details are still emerging, this incident highlights the fact that when entering into unknown situations, it is wise to have elevated state of awareness and the ability to defend oneself.
Common Sense Plan for Craigslist Sales
If you have never purchased something off of craigslist, you are more than likely in the minority. Anything from cars to cat sculptures can be purchased on the classifieds website and it is a great way to find what you are looking for at a great price.
Unfortunately, most transactions occur between two parties that have never met and do not know the intentions of the other. History has shown us that while statistically improbable, Craigslist deals can go bad.
Here is National Carry Academy’s recommendations for any Craigslist deal:
1. Always establish contact verbally with the party that you are meeting. Even something as simple as hearing someones tone of voice and the way they converse can lend some insight into the intentions of the other party.
2. Tell a friend or family member where and when you are meeting the other party. After the transaction, immediately call or text them to let them know that the deal is done.
3. Meet in a neutral location if possible. While some items (couches, furniture, etc) are difficult to meet anywhere else than the sellers home, it is always wise to meet on neutral ground in a more populated area to diminish the chance that someone will attempt to rob or harm you.
4. Some Police departments volunteer their parking lots as a location to complete meetings or transactions. If you local department allows it, this is a great option to ensure that no criminal is targeting you.
5. If at all possible, go to the meeting with someone else and have a plan to leave immediately if something doesn’t feel right. We have all got that feeling before that something is out of place. That is the bodies uncanny ability to pick up on subconscious cues that something is about to go wrong.
6. Finally, we always recommend that you carry your defensive firearm with you. This goes without saying, but you would be surprised at how many people with permits that carry consistently forget to do so during meetings with strangers.
