Most of our police men and woman have first hand knowledge of the issues of gun violence and gun control as most of them work the streets. Their jobs involve putting their lives on the line to do their jobs, frequently ending up in violent encounters involving firearms. Interestingly though, when it comes to finding ways to reduce gun violence and large scale shootings, the majority of law enforcement personnel do not think weapons bans or gun control is the answer.

PoliceOne is an organization of about 380,00 active and 70,000 retired police officers. The results of a PoliceOne survey showed:

  • 91% said banning assault weapons and/or ammunition magazines that hold more than 10 rounds would have no effect in reducing violent crime.
  • 91% Support the concealed carry of firearms by civilians who have not been convicted of a felony or deemed mentally ill.
  • 86% felt that casualties would have been reduced or avoided in mass shooting tragedies if a legally armed citizen had been present.
  • 81% were in favor of arming teachers and school administrators if they were properly trained and vetted.
  • 75% felt that legally armed citizens would have an impact on reducing crime rates.

The recently released 2016 survey of the US’s Chiefs of Police and Sheriffs revealed that 86.4% support nationwide recognition of state issued concealed weapon permits. 76% believe that qualified law-abiding armed citizens help law enforcement reduce violent criminal activity.

Here are 5 law enforcement officers who have been vocal about their support of citizens owning guns and/or carrying a concealed firearm.

David A. Clarke Jr, county Sheriff in Milwaukee, Wisconsin is a champion of gun rights. In 2015, he released a statement attacking the city administration for being “anti-gun” and “anti-Second Amendment” and “blaming the gun instead of the behavior.” Clarke actually encouraged “more Americans to arm themselves stating that law enforcement cannot arrive fast enough to prevent citizens from violent attacks.”

John Hanlin, Sheriff of Douglas County, Oregon, site of the Umpqua Community College mass shooting last year, is an ardent supporter of gun rights. He wrote a letter to Vice President Joe Biden shortly after the Dec. 14, 2012 massacre of school children at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut saying, “gun control is not the answer.” In the letter, Hanlin pledged not to enforce gun regulations he believed to be unconstitutional. Hanlin also appeared before a committee of the Oregon Legislature and spoke out against a proposed bill to expand background checks to private gun sales.

Sheriff Paul Van Blarcum, Of Ulster County New York stated on Facebook after the San Bernardino shooting “In light of recent events that have occurred in the United States and around the world I want to encourage citizens of Ulster County who are licensed to carry a firearm to PLEASE DO SO.”

Wayne Ivey, Sheriff of Brevard County Florida stated in a Facebook video after the San Bernardino shooting, ”The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun. I am in no way suggesting that we as citizens take on a vigilante role. What I am saying is that we need to be mentally and physically prepared to respond to an attack.”

Richard Mack, was a Sheriff from Graham County, Arizona who along with a Sheriff from Montana challenged a provision of the Bray Handgun Violence Prevention Act in 1996 before the U.S. Supreme Court, arguing that it was unconstitutional for the federal government to require local law enforcement officers to run background checks on prospective gun buyers. IN a 5-4 ruling, the background check provision in the act was struck down. Mack is now President of the Constitutional Sheriffs and Peace Officers Association, which trains law enforcement officers how to oppose federal efforts to push gun control efforts that are unconstitutional.

Apparently, standing up for state’s rights, the Second Amendment and reining in the federal government resonates with many law enforcement officers.
